A38 northbound slip road

Residents may have seen communications from HS2 about the reopening of the A38 northbound slip road at Streethay. We have received this update:

“We previously communicated that we were exploring options to open the A38 northbound slip road, with the expectation that it could open on a temporary alignment in October 2026, subject to the necessary independent Road Safety approvals and consent from Staffordshire County Council and National Highways.

However, following further assessment, a number of safety factors have been identified that mean the slip road cannot be safely opened on a temporary alignment while maintaining the standards required for road users and our workforce. We will continue to deliver the permanent solution and reopen the slip road in April 2027.

The northbound slip road closure: Friday 27 March 2026 to the end of April 2027.

We recognise that stakeholders had hoped the A38 northbound slip road could reopen in October 2026. We explored all feasible opportunities to achieve this and invested considerable effort in developing alternative arrangements.  While we appreciate this will be disappointing, we believe it is the safest and most responsible course of action.

The current diversion route will remain in place. This route has been carefully planned, is clearly signposted, and has been approved for use throughout the duration of the works.”
