A38 Egginton: Critical Gas Diversion Works
Cadent are currently carrying out work, on behalf of National Highways, to divert approximately 140 metres of gas main that runs through the foundation of the centre pier of the A5132 bridge, that runs over the A38 at Egginton.
This work is a necessary step to enable us to carry out a significant structural maintenance scheme on this bridge, which is planned to start in 2026.
As this involves working on the central reserve within a confined space, a lane has been closed on both the northbound and southbound carriageway, to allow for the work to be completed safely. Work was started on 10 October and is expected to last for 8-10 weeks. During this time, the lane closures will remain in place 24/7. There are also planned overnight carriageway closures of this section on 25 November and 26 November – we’ll provide more details of the diversion route closer to the time.
We are aware of the delays that people are experiencing on the A38 and local roads and apologise for the inconvenience caused by this work. We ask that customers allow for additional journey time throughout the duration and use alternative routes where possible.
National Highways has requested Cadent Gas do their upmost to finish the work on time or ahead of schedule.
As this work is being carried out by Cadent, if you have any enquiries regarding this, please contact them via any of the following channels:

A38 Alfreton essential drainage work
Until 24 October 2025, we’ll be carrying out essential work to maintain the drainage system on the A38 northbound near Alfreton. Our work will include cleaning and repairs of the drainage system along this stretch. The completed work will improve drainage and will continue to provide safe journeys along the A38.
We’ll work on weeknights, between 8pm and 6am, under full northbound carriageway closures of the A38 between Watchorn Roundabout and M1 junction 28. All lay-bys between these points will need to remain closed 24/7 throughout the duration of our work.
During closures, we’ll have a fully signed diversion route in place. Please see the attached bulletin for details.
We’re always looking to improve the way we work. If you haven’t provided your feedback then we would like to ask you to complete a short questionnaire. If you could spare just 4 minutes (maximum) and complete the survey, click here.
Wishing you all a safe journey
