Effect of the Display Being Off:

The data shows a clear pattern: when the SID displays were turned off, there was a consistent increase in speeding across multiple metrics.

  • Average Speed:
    • The average inbound speed increased at both locations, from 27 mph to 28 mph at Bradbury Lane and from 25 mph to 26 mph at Leofric Close.
    • The outbound average speed remained the same.
  • Number of Speeding Vehicles:
    • There was a notable increase in the number of vehicles traveling above both the 31 mph and 36 mph thresholds, particularly in the inbound direction.
    • For vehicles over 31 mph, both inbound and outbound traffic at both locations saw an increase.
    • The inbound increase was particularly significant at Bradbury Lane, rising from 12,059 to 15,364.
    • For vehicles over 36 mph, the number of inbound speeding vehicles increased at both sites.
  • Highest Recorded Speed:
    • The highest recorded speeds at Bradbury Lane remained the same(85 mph inbound and 100 mph outbound) regardless of whether the SID was on or off.
    • However, the highest recorded inbound speed at Leofric Close jumped from 64 mph to 77 mph when the displays were off, a substantial increase.

In conclusion, the data strongly suggests that the presence of the SID displays had a deterrent effecton speeding.

When the displays were turned off, there was a general increase in average speeds and a more pronounced rise in the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limits.

The SIDs clearly work but they are not slowing down the drivers who seemingly can’t be educated other than by enforcement.

We need to do more either by traffic calming or by enhanced education (APNR cameras) or by enforcement (average speed cameras).

The Parish Council is trying to get a meeting with the Staffordshire County Police and Fire Safety Commissioner but this is proving difficult.
